Trans-Am Releases 2016 Calendar
AUSTRALIAN Trans-Am has today confirmed a six round calendar for 2016, including an additional round at the historic Lakeside Park and a return to the Muscle Car Masters in a non-championship capacity.
The series will once again begin at the popular Lakeside Tribute in March before consecutive events at Queensland Raceway, supporting the Queensland Racing Driver’s Championship in May and highlighting the Shannons 2 Days of Thunder in June.
Arguably the biggest event on the local racing calendar, Australian Trans-Am will again feature at the 2016 Lakeside Classic, before returning to Lakeside for the penultimate championship round three weeks later as a support to the new Lakeside 300 endurance race.
The final round of the 2016 championship will again be held at Queensland Raceway at the Ipswich Classic before heading to Sydney Motorsport Park two weeks later for the Muscle Car Masters, a changed date for the popular event managed by the Australian Racing Drivers Club.
In a letter issued to competitors and fans, Australian Trans-Am Category Manager Ian Palmer suggests a round at Warwick’s Morgan Park circuit is still a possibility.
“A non-championship round at the Muscle Car Masters again.… [and] a non-championship round at Morgan Park providing we have enough competitors willing to go.
Australian Trans-Am management also announced a revision of the class structure.
“Next year we will host three classes to accommodate for people with different expectations and levels of commitment.
“We begin with class one the Trophy class, this is for those who have a slightly bigger budget allocated for their sport and a higher level of experience.
“Class two is the Sportsman’s class, for those who like to prepare the cars themselves, and while they take it seriously they also have other things to do in their lives.
“The third class is the 5 Litre Challenge, the good old five litres are back for another street fight.”
Further announcements regarding 2016 will be made in due course.
